Preaching is...

I love reading about preaching, and finding my conscience stirred by men of God who have thought through the implications and responsibilities of teaching the Word of God to the people of God. I thought that I'd post some of my favourite quotes on this theme over the next few weeks:

'In expository preaching the biblical text is neither a conventional introduction to a sermon on a largely different theme, nor a convenient peg on which to hang a ragbag of miscellaneous thoughts, but a master which dictates and controls what is said'.

-John Stott, Between Two Worlds, pp. 125-26

Excellent quote that warns against a tragic misuse!

I thought of a quote in the hermeneutical Spiral which i think is relevant

"We need to remember that only the inspired text is inerrant ... Our finite understanding and human perspective too easily control our interpretation. Therefore, our delineation of a passage's message carries authority only to the extent that it conforms to its intended meaning."

Thanks for both comments Gary. I really value the concept of caution when we come to the text, and allowing it to speak for itself - as you say we can so easily and tragically misuse Scripture and the opportunity to preach it!
